Ambrosia Maple is not a species of tree, rather it is a native maple tree that has been invaded by the asian ambrosia beetle.  These invasive and destructive bugs eat their way into the wood, bringing with them a fungus which stains the wood and provides their food source.

In this large salad bowl, the bugs are long gone, their holes plugged and the fungus is dried out and sealed.
